Unlike most West Palm Beach pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions. We don't just use poison every month. We solve your rodent problem forever, by following these steps:

  • Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic

  • Set a dozen or more rat or mouse traps in the house and attic
  • Remove all rodents as they are caught and monitor for activity
  • Once there is no more activity and no more caught, we're done
  • When necessary, we clean rodent droppings, replace insulation, and repair chewed electric wires

West Palm Beach Rodent Removal Tip:

Tips to Get Rid of Rats in the Attic
You're sitting down after a stressful day, watching your favorite program. Then you hear it—the scratching sound above your head. Your heart sinks as you realize: you've got rats in your attic.

Such a scenario is all too common. You might imagine that rats are confined to the ground floor. However, these rodents are tremendous climbers capable of jumping up to four feet into the air. Therefore, attics present a prime location for an infestation.

But don't despair. You can remove the rats quickly and efficiently by following the advice below.

How to tell if you have rats
We've already discussed the main sign, you hear them. But there are other telltale signs for which to look. You may:

  • Hear scratching noises
  • See gnawed items
  • Detect a foul smell emanating from the attic
  • Notice damage to the structure
  • Find rat droppings
  • See a spike in heating bills (from ruined insulation)
If you have rats, you'll want to move quickly. The longer they are left, the more damage that will be done.

Getting rid of the rats
rodent trapping The first step involves sealing up all the potential entryways. You want to prevent the rats from coming and going – you also want to stop them from returning after you've finally gotten rid of them. While closing up any holes, try to remove as much of your property from the attic as possible. That will limit the number of spaces in which the rats can hide and nest.

Next, you'll need to set up traps or put down poison. There is a range of different options:

  • Cage traps: Once you've sealed up the holes, place a cage trap blocking the final exit. Cage traps work using a one-way mechanism. Rats can enter the cage, but they cannot leave. Place bait in the trap to increase the chance of catching a rat.
  • Poison: You might think this is a great idea, but it comes with considerable risk. Poison takes many hours to work and can lead to dead rat carcasses rotting in the attic's recesses. This leads to maggots, flies, and a pungent smell – that's less than ideal. Plus, rats often avoid the poison, meaning the problem never goes away.
  • Snap traps: The classic rat trap – place bait (peanut butter works well) on the trap. When disturbed the trap snaps down on the rat.
  • Glue traps: Bait is placed on the trap. When the rat comes into contact with it, it becomes stuck and unable to move. However, this is likely only effective with smaller rats.
Alternately, you can use pungent smells like peppermint oil or castor oil which reportedly deter rats. Or if you're tempted to try a natural method, leave your cat in the attic for an afternoon.

If you don't feel confident about tackling the rats yourself, don't. Hire a professional. They'll have vast experience handling rat infestations and know the best method to remove the rats that leave the least damage to your property.

Keep the rats out
Once all the rats have been removed, you'll be wanting to stop them from coming back. Double-check that all potential entryways have been sealed shut. Trim any branches that might provide access to your roof.

You'll also want to do a complete deep clean of your attic. That means replacing any insulation that has been soiled—cleaning the area thoroughly with detergent to remove any infestation remains. If rats can detect the scent of other rats, you are at higher risk of a recurrence.

So, in short:

  1. Seal the entryways
  2. Lay traps
  3. Clean the attic thoroughly
  4. If in doubt, hire a professional
